Want to add an easy care houseplant to your collection? Here is a complete Lemon Meringue Pothos Care Guide!
Pothos are one of the easiest types of houseplants to keep alive. Plus, they come in so many varieties – it can be really fun to see how many you can collect!
Today I want to talk about a fun new pothos in my personal houseplant collection – the Lemon Meringue Pothos!
They are not only beautiful but also incredibly easy to care for!
In this complete care guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to keep your Lemon Meringue Pothos thriving.
What is a Lemon Meringue Pothos?
The Lemon Meringue Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Lemon Meringue’) is type of pothos with curled, crinkly variegated leaves.
The lemon part of the name comes from the yellow variegation on many of the leaves.
It’s not as yellow as a golden pothos but more of a grellow shade.
The leaves also have the ridged/cruly texture, similar to that of the global green pothos!
Lemon Meringue Pothos Origins
The Pothos is native to the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, where it thrives in tropical rainforests.
This specific variety of pothos was found as a sport (mutation) on Global Green Pothos and is patented and bred by Costa Farms plants.
Is the Lemon Meringue Pothos Rare?
The Lemon Meringue Pothos is patented by Costa Farms so it is rare in that only they can sell it. However, Costa Farms plants are readily available in nurseries and garden centers.
Is the Lemon Meringue Pothos Toxic?
Yes, the Lemon Meringue Pothos is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Take precautions to keep it out of reach of curious pets and children.
Lemon Meringue Pothos Care Guide
Here are the basic care needs to keep in mind when caring for this type of pothos!
Watering
In general, Pothos like a good soaking about once a week. Of course, this will be more often if your plant is in a warm area that dries it out faster and less often if it is in a dark or a cool spot.
How often should I water my Lemon Meringue Pothos?
Maintain moderately moist soil by allowing the top inch to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly when the soil feels dry to the touch, and ensure your pot has proper drainage.
Read my guide on drilling drainage holes in pots!
Should I mist my Lemon Meringue Pothos?
Misting can help increase humidity, which is beneficial, especially in dry indoor environments. Mist the leaves occasionally to provide a humid microclimate.
Lighting Needs
The Lemon Meringue Pothos thrives in bright, indirect light. These plants have a natural variegation to them, and need bright light to maintain that variegaton. Without bright light, they tend to revert back to a solid emerald green, like the global greens Pothos.
Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves. Place it near a north or east-facing window for optimal growth.
Can I keep my Lemon Meringue Pothos outdoors?
While it can tolerate some outdoor exposure in shaded or protected areas, it is primarily an indoor plant in most climates.
Soil and Potting
Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing soil and pots for your pothos.
Does the Lemon Meringue Pothos like to be root-bound?
No, the Lemon Meringue Pothos prefers slightly snug pots but not extreme root-binding. Repot it every 2-3 years into a slightly larger pot to accommodate growth.
Does the Lemon Meringue Pothos need a moss pole?
While not mandatory, providing a moss pole or trellis can encourage your Lemon Meringue Pothos to grow upright and develop larger leaves.
Here’s my guide on how to make a moss pole!
Fertilization
Feed your Lemon Meringue Pothos with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half-strength during the growing season (spring and summer).
Reduce fertilization in fall and winter.
Always follow the instructions on your fertilizer container and NEVER over fertilize – that’s a sure fire way to get yellow leaves and destroy the plant!
How to Propagate the Lemon Meringue Pothos
It’s incredibly easy to propagate the Lemon Meringue Pothos in water:
- Identify a healthy branch, preferably with new growth.
- Snip the branch with sharp scissors.
- Remove any lower leaves.
- Place in water so that at least one, preferably two, nodes are underwater.
- Change the water once a week and top it off as necessary.
- You should see roots form in 2-4 weeks.
- Once the roots are 2-3 inches long, plant the cutting in soil.
Why does my Lemon Meringue Pothos say propagation prohibited?
Costa Farms has a patent on this variety because they bred it and patented it. So, it is illegal to sell.
But, you can still take cuttings for your self – you just cannot sell them. **I am not a lawyer that is just what I have been told this is not legal advice** lol

Troubleshooting Lemon Meringue Pothos
Here are some common problems with a lemon meringue pothos!
My Lemon Meringue Pothos has brown, crispy leaf edges. What’s wrong?
Brown, crispy leaf edges often indicate low humidity or exposure to dry air. Increase humidity by misting the plant, using a humidity tray, or placing a small humidifier nearby. Ensure it’s not too close to heating or cooling vents.
Why are the leaves of my Lemon Meringue Pothos losing their variegation?
Loss of variegation can occur due to insufficient light. Ensure your plant receives adequate, indirect sunlight to maintain its vibrant variegated leaves.
Variegation may also be less pronounced on new growth.
My Lemon Meringue Pothos is growing too long. Can I trim it?
Absolutely! Trimming is recommended to control the plant’s size and shape. Prune the vines just above a leaf node to encourage bushier growth. You can also propagate the cuttings to create new plants.
Do I need to use a specific type of potting mix for my Lemon Meringue Pothos?
A well-draining, all-purpose potting mix works well for the Lemon Meringue Pothos. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent overwatering and root rot.
Can I use tap water to water my Lemon Meringue Pothos?
Using tap water is generally fine, but it can contain chlorine or minerals that may harm your plant over time.
To be safe, let the tap water sit for 24 hours to allow chemicals to dissipate, or use filtered water to prevent potential issues.
I personally try to use rain water on my plants whenever possible!
My Lemon Meringue Pothos isn’t growing much. What can I do to encourage growth?
To promote growth, ensure your plant is receiving enough indirect light, maintain proper watering practices, and fertilize during the growing season.
Additionally, consider repotting if it’s become root-bound, as providing more room for the roots can stimulate growth.
With these care guidelines, your Lemon Meringue Pothos will thrive and bring a burst of color to your indoor garden. Enjoy the beauty of its variegated leaves and the simplicity of caring for this delightful houseplant!
