Monstera Standleyana Plant Care Guide

Keep your monstera healthy and vibrant with our expert Monstera Standleyana plant care guide. From proper watering techniques to ensuring enough indirect light, discover everything you need for a thriving ‘Cobra Monstera.’

I was recently shopping at Lowe’s Home improvement for tiling supplies. We are putting a new backsplash up in our kitchen and needed to get some grout and other things.

Of course, I had to take a little detour to the house plant section of the store.

Honestly, I usually find that I already own most of the plants on sale, but a new type of Monstera caught my eye.

Of course, Lowes simply had it labeled as a “trending tropical”. But, I was able to use my iPhone to identify that this plant was a Cobra Monstera.

This is a plant I have never had before, though it reminded me of my Monstera Peru in shape – but with smooth, variegated leaves. I cant resist a variegated plant, so into the cart it went!

Monstera Standleyana Origins

Originating from the rainforests of Central America, Monstera Standleyana is accustomed to a warm, humid environment under the canopy of large trees.

Mimicking this environment in your home is key to keeping it happy and healthy!

Is Monstera Standleyana Rare?

Monstera Standleyana is considered somewhat rare in the houseplant market, especially varieties with heavy variegation.

This rarity can make it a prized possession for houseplant enthusiasts.

However, recently (summer 2024 I am writing this!) I have noticed them at Lowes and Home Depot. That’s because Costa Farms named them a Trending Tropical for the year and made a big push to get them out.

So, expect to see more Cobra Monsteras everywhere!

Is Monstera Standleyana Toxic?

Yes, like many other Monsteras, the Standleyana variety is toxic if ingested due to the presence of calcium oxalate crystals. It’s important to keep this plant out of reach of pets and children.

Monstera Standleyana Care Guide

Here’s what you need to do to keep this plant happy!

Watering Your Monstera Standleyana

This plant prefers evenly moist soil; however, it’s crucial to let the soil dry out slightly between waterings to prevent root rot.

Water thoroughly once the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch.

Make sure that the pot has drainage holes to prevent pooling water, which can rot the roots and kill the plant!

Humidity and Temperature

Monstera Standleyana thrives in high humidity environments, similar to its natural rainforest habitat. Aim for humidity levels of 60% or higher.

Room temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C) are ideal for this tropical plant.

Light Requirements

Provide your Monstera Standleyana with bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while too little light can cause the variegation to fade and reduce leaf size.

Soil and Repotting

Use a well-draining, peat-based potting soil to promote healthy growth. Repot your Monstera every two to three years to refresh the soil and encourage growth.

Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current one to allow for root development.

Fertilization

Feed your Monstera Standleyana with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every month during the growing season.

Reduce fertilization to every other month during the winter.

Propagation

Propagate your Monstera Standleyana by stem cuttings placed in water or soil. Ensure each cutting has at least one node and a few leaves to increase the chances of successful rooting.

Monstera Standleyana FAQs

How often should I water my Monstera Standleyana?

Water when the top inch of soil becomes dry. This might be approximately once a week, but adjust based on your home’s temperature and humidity.

Can I keep my Monstera Standleyana outside?

If you live in a warm climate without frost, you can keep it outside in a shaded area during the summer. However, it’s primarily an indoor plant and should be protected from cold temperatures.

What should I do if my Monstera Standleyana’s leaves start turning yellow?

Yellow leaves can be a sign of overwatering. Make sure you’re letting the soil dry out between waterings. Check for proper drainage in your pot, and adjust your watering schedule as necessary.

Why is my Monstera Standleyana losing its variegation?

A lack of light is a common cause of losing variegation. Place your plant in a location where it receives bright, indirect light to help maintain its striking patterns.

How can I increase the humidity for my Monstera Standleyana?

Besides misting the plant regularly, you can use a humidifier or place the plant on a pebble tray with water to increase ambient humidity around it.

With these care tips, your Monstera Standleyana will be a stunning showcase in your collection, enchanting visitors and bringing a touch of exotic flair to your home!
